Who We Are (History and Background Information)

In December of 1996 after five (5) months of deliberation and gelling the Volunteer Youth Corps (VYC) was formally launched. The birth of the VYC, as it soon became known as, was out of recognition on the part of young people who were attached to various departments of the Ministry Of Health of the need for young people to make a voluntary contribution to the development of the health sector. This initiative was under the auspices and guidance of the then Minister of Health. Like the Candy Stripers, a Canadian Based Charity, The Volunteer Youth Corps served to inculcate a genuine "Care For Humanity" in young Guyanese through organizing visits to the Georgetown Hospital.

The Volunteer Youth Corps, a voluntary, non-governmental health and social organization is made up of young people between the ages of 18- 29 years.

These young people have dedicated to society their time, talent, and knowledge. They are strongly motivated to develop Guyana’s health and social sectors and develop skills that are acquired voluntary through services to humanity.
