Blood Donor Recruitment
The Volunteer Youth Corps works very closely with the National Blood Transfusion Service of the Ministry of Health to support their strategy to increase the number of altruistic blood donors visiting the centre on a daily basis. As a feature of the organisation’s work in the health sector of Guyana, VYC has developed a complementary strategy to the work on NBTS in the following ways:
- Public Relations and Outreach - Phlebotomist/Donor Relationship - Follow up/Future Donorship Phase
Hospital Visitation Programme
Volunteer Youth Corps works towards providing the highest quality of non-medical care to patients of the Georgetown Public Hospital and St. Joseph Mercy Hospital.
The volunteers of the VYC through their voluntary service; work to provide unrestrained and effective contributions of their time, effort, ideas and energies in order to improve the psychological and physical well being of each patient they come into contact with. Volunteers work with patients on Saturdays to accomplish the following objectives: Improve relationship between nurses and volunteers, Physiological Care (“I’d like a glass of water.”), Safety and Security (“I’d feel safer with the bed rails up”), Love and Belonging (“You make me feel so good.”), Self-esteem and Recognition (“You’re very important…”), Fulfilment (“I think I did with my life what I was supposed to.”), Social Care (Speaking, Listening, Reading, etc.”), Provision of fundamental materials to meet patient needs, e.g. pampers, clothing, food and other basic needs.
Volunteers are also involved in similar outreach annually to geriatric and paediatric institutions in Guyana such as the Joshua Home, Uncle Eddies Home and Archers home. This work is especially intensified around the anniversary of the organisation in the month of December.
Medical Treatment Overseas Assistance
This component of VYC/s health programme is a spin off of the organisation’s work in public health facilities in Guyana such as Georgetown Hospital Corporation. From visits to wards in the hospital volunteers came across persons who were in need of medical treatment that the local health sector could not have attended to. This need was especially acute among children. In direct response, VYC started forging partnerships with institutions and agencies to raise the needed resources to bring medical attention to persons especially children. Over the years several persons have constantly approached the organisation for this kind of support.
VYC is constantly looking out for agencies including hospitals, medical practitioners, medical associations, private companies and other institutions that can help us attend to the numerous requests coming to the organisation. For more information please contact vycorg@guyana.net.gy
