Peer Counselling Training:   The Volunteer Youth Corps over two weekends completed a four-day Peer Counselling Workshop for Peer Educators working on the Guyana STI/HIV/AIDS Youth Project on 28th & 29th February and 6th –7th March 2004. Seventeen (17) Peer Educators benefited from this training, which was facilitated by the Guyana Responsible Parenthood Association. The peer educat ors included four (4) seniors’, eleven (11) juniors and two (2) new peers educators who are benefiting from Peer Education training presently. The training took a “hands on” participatory approach, this has proven very effective working with young people since they favour when their opinions are heard, group discussions were also used, topics discussed included: What is counselling?  What is giving advice?  The required Qualities of a Good Counsellor, the Role of a Peer Counsellor, the Use of GATHER method and other alternatives steps to use in counselling and counselling ethics. As part of making the training fun and entertaining, while allowing the trainees to “have a taste of the experience” of what peer counselling is about, the participants engaged in role-playing

situations which were developed to reflect some concerns of young people. The peer educators who benefited from this workshop have been given a three (3) month period to put into practice the new skills acquired before receiving certification as a peer counsellor. The peer educators have expressed their enthusiasm and are very thankful for the opportunity to acquire these new skills, which they have said have given them a new perspective on interactive communication with their peers and are very spirited to using these new skills. Furthermore, these new skills acquired will strengthen the peer educator’s ability to implement peer education, after all, peer education is most effective on a one on one basis.
